India’s UPI Expands to Qatar!

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) — once a domestic innovation — is fast becoming a global phenomenon. Today, it processes nearly 600 million transactions daily, setting benchmarks for speed, convenience, and security in digital payments.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) continues to extend UPI’s reach across borders, with presence now in 8 countries and counting. Its intuitive design and real-time processing make it the preferred choice for millions worldwide.

After successful launches in Singapore, the UAE, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and France, and now finally in Qatar, it is joining the growing UPI network — further cementing India’s position as a global leader in fintech innovation and digital transformation

What’s the highlight?

India has officially launched its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network in Qatar, in partnership with Lulu Group outlets across the country.

So, now, whether you’re shopping, dining, or buying daily essentials, you can make payments seamlessly in Qatar using India’s UPI. No more worrying about currency exchange or foreign payment hassles!

This milestone follows the earlier introduction of UPI at duty-free outlets in Hamad International Airport, marking another significant step in India’s mission to globalize its fintech ecosystem

The service has been enabled through a strategic partnership between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), Qatar National Bank (QNB), and Japanese payment gateway NETSTARS

This initiative is poised to transform trade and commerce between India and Qatar, while further strengthening bilateral trust and cooperation. During FY 2024–25, India’s bilateral trade with Qatar reached USD 14.14 billion, a figure expected to grow further as both nations deepen collaboration through such digital initiatives.

Highlighting the importance of this launch, Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry of India, remarked:

“The launch of UPI and UPI transactions is not just a digital payment solution but has the potential to revolutionize trade between Qatar and India. It’s an opportunity to expand our trust between the two nations because as we seamlessly integrate the payment systems of Qatar and India, our people will be able to trade more, trade smarter at lower cost”.

How is this beneficial?

The launch of UPI in Qatar offers multiple advantages for Indian visitors and businesses alike:

  • Seamless Cross-Currency Payments:
Indian visitors can now make transactions in both Indian Rupees (INR) and Qatari Riyals (QAR) using UPI, removing the need for frequent currency conversions.
  • Real-Time QR-Based Transactions:
UPI supports instant, QR-based payments, eliminating the hassle of carrying cash or dealing with exchange rate fluctuations at local stores in Qatar.
  • Accepted at Major Outlets:
From shopping malls to restaurants and tourist destinations, UPI ensures quick, contactless, and secure payment experiences — making travel smoother and more convenient.
  • Enhanced Security:
With two-factor authentication and instant payment confirmations, UPI guarantees that every transaction is both safe and traceable, offering peace of mind to users abroad.

Conclusion

By integrating India’s real-time digital payment infrastructure with Qatar’s growing economy, this initiative simplifies everyday transactions for individuals while strengthening trade, tourism, and investment ties between the two nations.

With its unmatched convenience and expanding global footprint, UPI is emerging as India’s digital ambassador to the world — transforming how people connect, pay, and do business across borders
